Do students at Edinburgh not live and die for their uni? That’s very rich coming from Swansea students, if we do say so ourselves. ITV2 has a new dating show coming called ‘The Cabins’ and applications are open now.
It represents the latest in a series of trips to America by Swansea University , which has formalised strategic agreements with a number of overseas institutions so as to share expertise and give Wales-based students the chance to study abroad. People have been disappearing off after their talks to have dinner, where all sorts of ideas are being scoped and developed. They are more inclined to challenge each other than they would with their immediate colleagues. This showcase of outstanding presentations from some of their top scholars is the latest example of that.

Application of calibrated Schmidt-hammer surface-exposure dating SHD to the run-out debris of a rock avalanche at Alstadfjellet, Valldalen, southern Norway, has yielded ages that are consistent within uncertainties with terrestrial cosmogenic 10 Be surface-exposure ages for the debris. Three SHD calibration equations were generated based on different correction factors for the 10 Be ages from the moraines.
The SHD ages In addition, the former ages have a precision of 1. This work demonstrates that calibrated SHD can be of comparable accuracy to and may have improved precision over 10 Be ages, and should be given greater consideration and prominence in Quaternary dating studies. Professor Richard B Davies has held the top role at Swansea university since , but an email sent to staff yesterday said that during an internal investigation he had been suspended. It is not yet known what the investigation is looking into, but the enquiries have not yet been completed.
As part of the same investigation, the dean of the school of management, Professor Marc Clement, has also been suspended, as have two other members of staff from the school.

Maev Kennedy. Was the summer of really a parade of parched weeks of simmering heat? The oak trees still growing on Welsh hillsides will carry the memory deep within their timber, as they do of the summers of torrential rain when a river flowed through the back door of one of the oldest continuously occupied houses in Britain, along the flagstoned hall and out the front door. A pioneering dating technique that analyses the stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon locked within the timber, originally from the rain that fell on the living tree, has been used successfully for the first time to date an ancient building.
The research has implications for securely dating other buildings where the historical record is patchy or missing and dendrochronology—at its simplest, counting the growth ring a tree adds each year—fails when the sample is unsuitable, as it was at Llwyn Celyn. The technique, cross-referenced with conventional dendrochronology databases, is creating not just a dating system but a chronology of climate change. The tests revealed that the oak was felled in the winters of and , dating the building because the timber would have been used unseasoned soon after it was cut.
Llwyn Celyn has been in the highest category of listed building since the s, when an inspector from the Ministry of Works made his way there with a clipboard and realised what a treasure lay within farm outbuildings that were a mere three centuries old. The structure, even then nearing dereliction, was no humble farmhouse but a distinguished house with beautiful panelling and elaborately carved timber door frames: historians believe it must be linked to the once wealthy and magnificent nearby Llanthony Priory, although no records have been traced.
The last serious modernisation was in the s; the Victorian era introduced some flowery wallpaper, and the 20th century brought electricity only to the corner of the building still inhabited. The house was propped up with emergency scaffolding from the s that was itself in danger of complete collapse when Anna Keay, the director of the Landmark Trust, first saw the building. The last residents were the farming brothers Trevor and Lyndon Powell, who were born and brought up there and moved out in into a brand-new house to discover for the first time the joys of central heating.
The building will now earn an income as a holiday rental to secure its future, like all the Landmark Trust properties. Research continues in the hope that somewhere in some dusty archive a document survives that will tell building historians who built it, and why.

W hat do humans really want in a long-term partner? If people were given a limited menu of characteristics from which to choose, what would be the non-negotiables? And how much of what we value in a partner is influenced by culture and how much is innate? In a nifty new report out of the University of Swansea in the U.

The principal method for determining the age of historic buildings and wooden artefacts in the UK is dendrochronology tree-ring dating. Across Wales however, conventional dendrochronology often fails to yield a robust date owing to the presence of complacent ring width sequences or the use of short-lived or fast-growing timbers in construction. As a result, it is impossible to assign a precise calendar age to structures of high historic or cultural importance. This project will aim to assess the suitability of a new precision dating technique developed by the Swansea team to provide calendar dates for houses, living trees and timbers sourced from across Wales.
This will help to ascertain the geographic and practical limits of the stable oxygen isotope method for the dating of historic timbers. This project will provide important proof of concept for dating houses in this region and will also inform decision-making in the listing, management and preservation process. The scholarship provides 1 year funding with a 3 month period to complete the thesis.

Here’s What Young People All Over the World Say They Want Most in a Partner
One of the top qualities that we look for in a long-term partner is kindness, according to new research by Swansea University. In a paper published by the Journal of Personality , researchers had over 2, college students from across the globe build themselves an ideal lifelong partner by using a fixed budget to “buy” characteristics. While traits like physical attractiveness and financial prospects were important, the one that was given the highest priority was kindness.
Students were given eight attributes they could spend “mate dollars” on: physical attractiveness, good financial prospects, kindness, humour, chastity, religiosity, the desire for children, and creativity. While there were some differences in behaviour between Eastern and Western students — there were also some remarkable similarities.

The details of this increasingly Kafkaesque drama, dating back to , were reported in the News sections of Radical Philosophy as they emerged. Yet it is precisely this desire to run a university college like a company that is highlighted in the report as the source of the problems:. They are academic institutions …. Nor, one suspects, in quite a few other places.
It is for what it has to say about academic freedom and the distinctive character of the university that the report is to be most welcomed. Hopefully, other universities will also take note. Apart from the behaviour of the various individuals concerned, it is the College procedures which come in for harshest criticism. The report comments on the foolishness of the failure to set up an independent inquiry at an early stage.
So is this, finally, the end of the affair? And as the meetings to negotiate the working conditions of the three lecturers begin I write in July , the stirring of a last stand by the old guard can already be felt.

William and Rebekah Shackley are dear friends of mine, whose wedding I was fortunate enough to attend last April in Las Vegas. It seemed to be a long time coming. Will was living in Swansea, Bekah in Cedar city, Utah. To burrow down on some record breaking stats over their two year online relationship they spent hours on Facebook messenger call, with their longest conversation spanning 52 hours! I interviewed Will and Bekah to gain some insight and advice for any of you involved in either an online or transcontinental relationship.

Swansea University F.C. is a Welsh football club, which currently plays in the Cymru South. Swansea University has a Welsh League heritage dating back to the s, when under its previous guise as the University College Swansea.
From its Icelandic origins in the study of visible tephra horizons, tephrochronology took a remarkable step in the late s with the discovery of a ca. Since then, the search for these cryptotephra deposits in distal areas has gone from strength to strength. Indeed, a recent discovery demonstrates how a few fine-grained glass shards from an Alaskan eruption have been dispersed more than km to northern Europe.
Instantaneous deposition of geochemically distinct volcanic ash over such large geographical areas gives rise to a powerful correlation tool with considerable potential for addressing a range of scientific questions. A prerequisite of this work is the establishment of regional tephrochronological frameworks that include well-constrained age estimates and robust geochemical signatures for each deposit. With distal sites revealing a complex record of previously unknown volcanic events, frameworks are regularly revised, and it has become apparent that some closely timed eruptions have similar geochemical signatures.
